What is the Cambridge Diet?
The Cambridge Diet is a weight loss programme which involves replacing regular meals with vitamin and mineral fortified shakes. There are six steps to the program which limit your calorie intake from anywhere between 415 to 1500 kcals a day.
The meal replacement shakes are all made by the Cambridge Manufacturing Company Ltd, and sold by "counsellors" who visit your home to discuss your requirements.
Is the Cambridge Diet safe?
The Cambridge diet is basically a starvation diet, which appears to emphasise more on the amount of calories you consume and not on a healthy, active lifestyle. Weight loss programmes which severely limit your food intake can cause a number of unwanted side effects, mainly a lack of energy, loss of muscle mass (important for burning fat) and a slowing down of the metabolism.

Not a good experience ![]()
I tried the Cambridge Diet after the birth of my second son. The weight quickly fell off, but I noticed I was losing my hair, my nails became brittle and split, and I had no energy whatsoever. When I did start eating solid food again I couldn't keep it down. Not recommended. Kelly from Preston.
Ideal as a 'quick fix' ![]()
I used this diet as a quick fix before my wedding, and did manage to lose a decent amount of weight. But as soon as I started eating 'normal' food again, I piled it all back on. Deborah from Lancashire.
Fantastic! ![]()
I found the diet easy to follow, as you know exactly what your going to be eating everyday. I achieved the weight loss I was hoping for, and managed to maintain it using the soups and porridge. Katie from Peterborough.
Did help me lose weight ![]()
I've managed to lose weight on a few occasions using this diet. I think it's a good choice to kick start you into a diet, but found it was easy to regain the the weight I had lost. Megan from North Wales.
Poor starvation diet ![]()
Products are expensive and tasted terrible. I constantly felt hungry all the time, which made me irritable and grumpy. A total waste of money, don't bother. Anne from Enfield.
The Cambridge Diet Conclusion
Leading a fit and healthy lifestyle should be at the forefront of your diet, you should avoid weight loss plans or programmes which focus on extremes as these can often lead to more weight gain once the diet is over.
What works? - Supplementing your diet with either a natural fat binder or appetite suppressant can help you lose fat and not "water weight" which is often the case with starvation diets.
Whatsmore, the weight you lose is more likely to stay off as you can re-train your eating habits whilst still enjoying normal everyday foods, and not just drinking expensive milkshakes.
Our top recommendation is Proactol which is both a fat binder and an appetite suppressant. It contains Prickly Pear extract which is 100% natural and clinically proven to remove 28% of fat from your regular diet, this means you can also reduce the calorie content of your meals by around 150 kcals.
Additionally, Proactol will help reduce your portion sizes as it acts as a natural appetite suppressant. Read here for more information on how Proactol works.
